Project: The Hives "Enough is Enough"

Project Overview:

When the legendary Swedish rock band The Hives released their high-octane single "Enough is Enough," director Erik Kockum (SNASK) envisioned a gritty, 16mm boxing match. The creative concept placed the band in the center of a hostile, overwhelming crowd - a visual metaphor for the song’s relentless energy. However, practical constraints during the shoot meant the arena didn't reflect the scale required to make the band feel truly outnumbered. RIO reached out to SweetSpot to solve the crowd density issue and manage the final technical finishing within a tight, multi-city delivery window.

Challenges & Solutions


Challenge: Budget-Conscious Crowd Multiplication

The project lacked the budget for expensive CG extras or a high-volume AI build. Furthermore, because the video wasn't originally filmed with VFX in mind, there were no dedicated background plates to use for easy compositing.

Solution:

The track title is "Enough is Enough". But sometimes... it's not enough. So we duplicated the crowd. ðŸ¥Š  SweetSpot brought in roster generalist Lazhar, who utilized a sophisticated "guerrilla" approach to 2D compositing. By stabilizing existing crowd shots, rotoscoping the audience members, and strategically tracking them into new positions, he "built" the stadium from the ground up. He used every trick in the book - from scaling and blurring to creative positioning - to transform a handful of extras into a massive, hostile environment.


Challenge: The 180-Degree CRT Screen Match
A key scene in a hospital featured a 180-degree camera pan across the knocked-out lead singer, passing an old CRT television. We needed to track content onto the screen, but the production lacked on-set survey data or lens information.

Solution:

Without metadata to automate the track, Lazhar had to "eye-match" the camera move. He manually accounted for the lens distortion and the specific curvature of the vintage CRT glass. By meticulously aligning the screen content to the practical camera sweep, he ensured the digital insert felt like a physical part of the 16mm hospital environment.

Challenge: Matching the 16mm Film Aesthetic

The source material for the Load Finder app consisted of static screenshots that lacked the resolution and layer depth required for high-fidelity 4K animation.

Solution: To ensure the added crowds and the CRT screen felt authentic to the original medium, the team manually matched the specific film grain and gate weave of the 16mm plates. This attention to detail ensured that the VFX additions were indistinguishable from the practical footage, maintaining the grit and sweat of the boxing-film aesthetic.​

 

Results & Impact

 

Atmospheric Elevation: The crowd multiplication did more than just fill empty seats; it amplified the "hostile enemy" theme of the video, making the band’s presence in the ring feel significantly more intense.

​Agile Technical Management: Handling the Online, SweetSpot acted as a technical hub. We coordinated the hand-off to a colorist in Berlin, conformed the final material, and managed the master export for the label’s global launch.​

​

High-Impact Efficiency: Delivered in just a few days, the project proves that high-level compositing and smart resource management can produce world-class results on a music-video budget and timeline.
