Project Overview:
Following the wrap of two major campaigns for the Volvo XC60 and XC90, a critical post-production challenge emerged. The background of the hero footage was heavily populated with non-Volvo vehicles, distracting from the "hero" cars and diluting the brand’s premium aesthetic. With the final spots already in the pipeline, the agency, Forsman & Bodenfors, faced a difficult choice: a prohibitively expensive and time-consuming reshoot or a massive "fix-in-post" operation. Stark reached out to SweetSpot to manage the cleanup, which required a total visual overhaul of the background environments under a nearly impossible deadline.

Challenges & Solutions

Challenge: The Seven-Day Sprint
The original scope estimated a two-week production window. However, updated delivery schedules compressed the timeline to just seven days. This required cleaning up two separate commercials, US-market regional versions, and extensive "running footage" sequences.
Solution: Recognizing that the workload exceeded the capacity of any single team within the timeframe, SweetSpot restructured the project into a dual-studio strike team. By deploying both Stereocolor and Magoo simultaneously, we doubled the available senior talent. Each studio took ownership of one car model, allowing for parallel workflows and a guaranteed on-time delivery.
Challenge: Complex Motion and Environment Reconstruction
The footage featured sweeping camera movements and high-speed action, making simple "paint-outs" impossible. Removing background cars left significant "holes" in the frames that needed to be filled with perfectly matched textures.
Solution: Small teams of elite senior artists utilized a combination of 3D projection mapping and surgical "brute force" painting. They recreated complex road textures, motion-blurred foliage, and architectural details to ensure that the background looked untouched, even in shots with extreme perspective shifts.
Challenge: Future-Proofing the Master Material
Beyond the primary 30-second spots, Volvo required "running footage" that would be used for various international edits and longer takes.
Solution: We prioritized the cleanup of the longer running footage takes first. By "pre-cleaning" the source material rather than just the individual commercial edits, we ensured that all subsequent social cuts and regional adaptations were already optimized, saving the client from repetitive costs in the future.

Results & Impact
Significant Cost Savings: By resolving the issue in post-production, SweetSpot saved the client and agency from the logistical nightmare and massive financial burden of a multi-car international reshoot.

Elite Resource Allocation: Despite the intense "crunch time," the project was staffed with only five high-level senior artists across both studios. This lean, expert-driven approach ensured high-fidelity results without the communication lag of a larger, less specialized VFX house.
Agile Project Management: The success of the project hinged on SweetSpot’s ability to pivot from a single-studio plan to a multi-studio collaboration the moment the time restriction was revealed, providing the client with a scalable solution that a traditional agency might struggle to coordinate on short notice.
